Minimum Quantity Lubrication / Micro-dosing

Minimum Quantity Lubrication / Micro-dosing

Micro-dosing of Lubricants in Manufacturing:

Micro-dosing is also called:

  • Near Dry Lubrication
  • Limited Volume Lubrication
  • Dripping
  • Mist Lubrication
  • Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL)
  • “Dry” Lubrication

Our history of MQL in SA:

In 1990 a Machining Center for Aluminium castings was built to manufacture end plates for alternator/starter motors. Multiple Drilling, tapping, facing operations were performed. Conventional soluble oil was used. Ingress of condensed moisture caused sensitive electronics and sensors to malfunction. The first dosing machine was then built and the problem was solved.

Properties of lubricants used in MQL:

  • Good lubricity / film strength and EP Properties
  • High Flash Point – Safety
  • Good Anti-Wear – AW Properties
  • Environmentally Acceptable
  • Biodegradable (Plant Oils)
  • Non-staining
  • Correct Viscosity
  • Low Odour
  • Affordable

Typical work applications of MQL:

  • Band sawing
  • Circular sawing
  • Milling
  • Tapping
  • Boring
  • Drilling
  • Forging
  • Bending
  • Punching
  • Roll forming
  • Pipe bending
  • Stamping
  • Chain lubrication
  • Die casting
  • Mould lubrication
  • Central lubrication
